Tell California Lawmakers: Stop the Utility Bailout

Don’t let utilities off the hook for the wildfires they cause.

California lawmakers are considering proposals that would limit utility accountability for catastrophic wildfires caused by utility equipment. If enacted, these proposals could shift billions of dollars in wildfire costs away from utilities and onto homeowners, taxpayers, wildfire victims, businesses, schools and local governments.

The proposals would also limit or eliminate insurers’ ability to recover the costs of claims they pay from the at-fault utility. Every dollar recovered through subrogation helps offset costs that would otherwise be borne through insurance premiums. With the cost to rebuild a home up 47% since 2020, protecting that ability is more important than ever.

California needs a responsible path forward that reduces wildfire risk, speeds recovery and keeps utilities accountable—not a bailout that shields utility profits and shifts costs to consumers and communities.
